 Will  You PAY a Levy for Plastic Bags?  

If you've watched, heard or read any media in the past few months, you will be aware that the excessive use and flow-on effects in land-fill and our waterways of plastic bags, especially shopping bags, has come into focus with the federal government authorities.

A recommendation to introduce a levy of 25 cents per bag is currently being debated.  It will not be left unresolved.

Retailers will have the levy imposed on them and they have indicated the only way to absorb it is to not - passing the additional costs on to the consumer.  That's you, me and every other person you know, including your clients.

A new era in how we collect and transfer our purchasers will emerge.  Just as it did with the introduction of plastic bags to replace the brown paper bags in the 1970/80s.  This is good news for our environment as we manage to choke it in so many different ways.

And fortunately, a growing number of individuals want to have a more positive effect on the environment and their hip-pocket with a solution other than paying a premium for plastic!  (The premium our environment pays is far more costly than 25 cents.)

Using your calico/cotton bag at the supermarket check-out and other general shopping, especially when you make small purchases will eliminate the need to use plastic AND save you and everyone else money. 

AND it doesn't end with shopping.  There are many opportunities to replace using plastic bags from other retailers such as clothing shops and alike that we often use for day outings such as the beach or park, to take to sports or school or even the library! 

Statistics show the average number of items purchased per transaction, since the introduction of 24 hour shopping has reduced significantly.  Take note next time you are in the supermarket of where the majority of people are lined up - you will find it is in the Express Lane for purchasing 8 or so items.  These purchases are often put in to 2 or more bags.  Calculate the number of bags likely to be consumed in the few minutes you are lined up.  Add up the number of people, double that number, AT LEAST!  And that's only the Express Lanes!
